FAQs: Program
I never graduated high school. Am I still eligible for a DMK scholarship?
Yes, but you must have a GED.
If my financial aid covers all tuition costs may I still be in the program?
Absolutely. You will still be granted up to $750 per semester, dependent upon need, and can receive all the normal educational support.
I am receiving another scholarship. Am I still eligible for the DMK scholarship?
Yes, but we do take financial need into consideration as well as the amount of your other scholarships and grants when calculating the amount of your award.
I am not a United States citizen. Am I still eligible for the DMK scholarship?
Yes, but you must be a Legal Resident Alien and be eligible for financial aid.
I have already received a college degree (either Associate's or Bachelor's) but would like to return to school for another program (i.e. Physician's Assistant or Culinary Arts). Am I still eligible for the scholarship?
No. Scholarship recipients must be pursuing their first degree.
Is there a GPA requirement?
In order to apply, you must have a cumulative GPA of 2.0 or above. To renew each semester, you must maintain a 2.5 GPA.
May I be enrolled in a certificate or vocational program at one of the City Colleges of Chicago?
Yes, certain ones. Please see the list of Eligible City Colleges Programs.
Do I have to complete my Associate's Degree?
No. The DMK scholarship coordinator and college advisor will help you lay out an academic plan. If you are planning to transfer to a four-year school, it may be unnecessary for you to complete your Associate's Degree.
If I finish at the City Colleges of Chicago, are there any other options for me with the Daniel M. Kerrane, Jr. Foundation?
Yes. We provide a continuing partial scholarship to students who will attend a four-year college. We also will advise with job placement. Finally, we welcome former scholars to stay involved in the program and act as mentors or tutors.
What if I don't want the personalized educational support that you offer because I feel confident I can do it all myself?
You will not be awarded a scholarship. We believe that our educational support offers an essential part of the college experience. DMK will not do anything with which you do not feel comfortable, but we do expect that you communicate with the DMK scholarship coordinators, meet with your academic advisor and attend the mentoring sessions.
