Financial Aid Help

Filing for financial aid is an essential part of the college admissions process. Completing this process allows each student to receive as much available federal and state funds as possible, before receiving further scholarships.

Although at first it may seem to be a daunting task, filing a FAFSA has been made faster and easier by filing online. Furthermore, the Financial Aid offices at each City College of Chicago have specific computer stations set up for this process, and have additional personal assistance. Finally, DMK would be happy to assist you with filing your FAFSA. Please call our office at 312.920.9605 for further assistance.

Please look over the brief overview that lays out some key information and tips regarding Financial Aid.

There are two types of financial aid:

  • Gift aid: grants and scholarships.
  • Self help aid: work-study and loans.

All students are required to file their FAFSA (Free application for federal student aid). Please consider the following:

  • All financial aid (federal, state and institutional) begins with filing the FAFSA.
  • A student can pick up a FAFSA application in the guidance office at school, call the Department of Education at (800)433-3243 or file online at fafsa.ed.gov. Please note that online filings are faster and easier.

While filing for the FAFSA is a simple process, consider the following tips before you begin:

  • File as early as possible beginning January 1st. The sooner you receive your SAR (Student Aid Report), the sooner you will know what your expected contribution will be for that year.
  • Be prepared.  You will need last year's income tax return, or estimate if you didn't file a return.
  • You will need W2's, any records of earned income, investment income, or bank statements.
  • You will need mortgage statements and child support figures.
  • You will need to provide information on any untaxed income like welfare, social security, or veteran's benefits.
  • You will need to provide the student's social security card and drivers license.
