"When I started college, there were times when I had no clue what the teacher was saying. I thought I should just quit, but I don't like to give up."

DMK Scholar
Scholarship Program
The DMK scholarship program awards "last dollar" funding which pays for the costs associated with obtaining a two-year degree and also an educational support system that provides resources and structure for each student.
The Financial Component
- DMK covers any remaining tuition/fee costs after governmental resources are exhausted. Each scholar must apply for financial aid.
- DMK provides up to $750 per semester in supplemental funds to cover the cost of books, school supplies, transportation, and other living expenses.
Educational Support
Through our personalized educational support program, DMK Scholars are assisted with both personal and academic issues, helping students successfully navigate the world of higher education. Our scholarship program includes the following components:
- Academic Advising: each scholar is paired with a college adviser at his or her school. Advisers assist with academic issues and can refer scholars to appropriate campus and community resources.
- DMK Advising: Program coordinators work closely with scholars to assist with academic issues like job counseling, transferring to four-year schools, and the financial aid process.
- Programs/Seminars: Scholars are required to attend a pre-semester orientation that addresses study skills and testing techniques. These orientations provide real world strategies for meeting the demands of college, from reading a syllabus to talking with professors about course material.
- Tutoring: college advisers work in partnership with program staff to coordinate tutoring for students at each of their schools. If the colleges do not provide adequate tutoring, DMK pays for private tutoring.
- Mentoring: DMK facilitates mentoring connections by establishing one-on-one interaction between community members and scholars. Mentors are successful members of the Chicago community who work in a similar career field to which the scholar plans to enter.
